FAQ

What is this group all about?
The St. Croix Valley Chapter (SCVMCGT), est. 2012, provides a community support and resource network for local parents, families, educators and other professionals who live or work with gifted children and are interested in their education and well-being.

What is MCGT?
MCGT stands for Minnesota Council for the Gifted and Talented (www.mcgt.net).  MCGT provides connections, support, resources and advocacy for gifted children throughout the State.  Their efforts in the legislature have helped more funding to be set aside for gifted programming.  Regional MCGT chapters offer way for parents, educators, and others to connect in a focused way by serving a particular area.

Do I have to be a member of MCGT to be in this group?
We do ask that you become a member of MCGT for active participation in this chapter.  Annual member dues ($35 per family) include State and chapter participation; all proceeds support State MCGT and chapter operations and events.  Non-members are welcome to attend local meetings for $5 / event; the full amount may be applied toward MCGT membership if you register during that meeting.  MCGT is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization.

How do I know if my child is gifted?
This is not always an easy question to answer.  Sometimes test scores signal a child is demonstrating advanced or accelerated abilities, especially if their talent is in a core subject like reading or math.   Schools use such test scores in a variety of ways.  What about a gifted artist, musician or engineer?  What about the young inventor or creative thinker?  Please see the resource page at our chapter website under "gifted identification" for many articles that expand on this question.

Do my children have to have a certain test score for me to belong to this group?
There are many different ways children are gifted.  We do not use a child’s test scores as a membership requirement or definition of ‘gifted.’  Anyone -- parent, caregiver, educator, community member -- who feels they would benefit from the resources and support here may join.

What about children who are gifted in nonacademic areas?
We have resources for children gifted in core academic areas, music, and arts.  One area we do not keep information on is athletic talents.

How often do you meet?
The St. Croix Valley Chapter, previously a MCGT parent group, formally became a chapter in January 2012.  We plan to meet bi-monthly during odd-numbered months of the year.  This may change depending on the needs and desires of members.

Which schools do you serve?
We serve all schools in the St Croix Valley area, including public, private, charter and home schools.
